Memories from the Soviet period: 9 b

  • Schoolchildren had to wear schooluniform, which made them more equal.
  • Everything was cheaper.
  • Education was free for everyone.
  • Medical aid was for free.
  • There were no freedom of speech.

  • There was a cinema in Antsla.
  • There were fewer taxes and taxes were smaller.(By Keidi)

  • Some women men`s work, but they didn`t complain. (By Mariliis)

  • My mum remembers that when big root beer barrels were brought, everyone was very excited. They crabbed every cup they could and went to buy root beer. Everyone was sad when root beer ran out.
  • Only those got to buy books who were friends of the book seller. So book sellers were kept in good hands. Everyone wanted to be their friend.
  • When you wanted to buy a car you had to write an application. But not everyone could buy it. You had to do some public favors. My parents got the right to buy a "Žaparožetš". It cost 4000 rublas. They went to Tallinn to pick ours out. We were really happy to get one.
  • Also, even to buy furniture you had to write an application. (By Liisi)
